What began as a simple weekend project to replace a leaky faucet has transformed into a thriving micro-society complete with its own currency, governing body, and surprisingly robust agriculture system, according to homeowner Derek Willoughby of Maple Ridge.
The kitchen, which has been under construction since spring 2019, now houses approximately 47 subcontractors who have established permanent residency behind the unfinished drywall. The community, known locally as “Reno-topia,” has developed a barter economy based on leftover tiles and operates under a constitution written entirely on Home Depot receipts.
“At first I was concerned about the timeline,” said Willoughby, speaking through a small window he cut into the plastic sheeting that has separated his living room from the construction zone for three years. “But when they elected their first mayor and started growing tomatoes in the exposed plumbing, I figured we were making real progress.”
The renovation has attracted attention from urban planners worldwide, as Reno-topia boasts a 0% unemployment rate and has successfully implemented a universal healthcare system using Band-Aids from Willoughby’s medicine cabinet. City officials report that the kitchen civilization is now applying for recognition as an independent municipality, with plans to annex the guest bathroom by Christmas.
