Local Man’s ‘Quick Weekend Project’ Enters Its Fourteenth Month

NEIGHBORS on Elm Street report that Dave Kowalski’s back deck, originally slated for a two-day renovation last spring, has now been under construction for 411 consecutive days, achieving what local historians are calling ‘the longest continuous home improvement project not involving a lottery win or a divorce settlement.’

The project began innocently enough, with Kowalski purchasing a single box of composite decking boards and a level. It has since ballooned to include a rented cement mixer, four returned-and-repurchased power tools, a tarp that has become a permanent architectural feature, and what he describes as ‘just a little bit of rewiring while I’m in there anyway.’ The deck itself remains approximately 60% complete, a figure that has not changed since October.

‘I could finish it this weekend if I wanted to,’ Kowalski said, standing next to a pile of lumber that has begun to visibly warp. ‘But I found some water damage under there, and honestly, once you open that up, you kind of have to look at the joists, and then the joists made me think about the foundation, and now I’m just waiting on a guy to come look at the foundation.’ No such guy has been contacted.

His wife, Renata Kowalski, confirmed the family has hosted zero cookouts since the project began and now enters the backyard exclusively through a side gate to avoid eye contact with the unfinished railing. ‘He watched one video about French drains in March,’ she said, ‘and I haven’t seen him since.’ Home improvement retailer employees at the nearby hardware store say Kowalski is now recognized by first name and greeted the way regulars are greeted at a bar, with one cashier reportedly asking, ‘Deck again, Dave?’ as a form of small talk rather than a genuine question.
