Local Farmer Achieves Total Enlightenment After Staring at Corn for Fourteen Consecutive Hours

MAPLETON — Area farmer Gerald Hutchins reportedly reached a state of profound spiritual clarity on Tuesday after standing motionless in his cornfield for over fourteen hours, staring at a single stalk until, in his words, “the corn started staring back.”

Witnesses say Hutchins began his vigil around dawn while checking for corn borers, but became transfixed by what he later described as “the terrifying geometry of the husk.” By noon, neighbors had gathered lawn chairs to watch, assuming he was either having a stroke or discovering the meaning of life. It turned out to be both.

“He just kept saying ‘it’s all connected’ and pointing at the tassels,” said neighbor Donna Pratt, who brought him a sandwich around hour nine that he did not eat. “At one point he took off his boots and said the soil wanted to speak with him directly. I’ve farmed next to Gerald for twenty years and I’ve never seen him this calm, or this barefoot.”

Agricultural extension officer Miles Ferber attempted to intervene around hour twelve but was reportedly waved off with the phrase, “The furrow knows things, Miles.” Ferber later noted that prolonged sun exposure combined with a diet of gas station coffee can produce symptoms “remarkably similar to enlightenment,” though he admitted Hutchins’ corn yield this year has been unusually excellent.

Hutchins has since returned to normal farm duties, though he now refers to his tractor as “a vessel” and insists the soybeans in the north field are “still deciding what they want to be.” Local farm supply stores report a small but noticeable uptick in customers asking to “just sit with the seed for a minute” before purchasing.
