GRAND JUNCTION, CO — After 14 years of continuous wear, structural engineers have confirmed that Dale Trumbull’s khaki cargo shorts are now classified as a load-bearing garment, meaning removal of the shorts could result in a partial collapse of his daily routine and possibly his hip.
The shorts, which feature eleven pockets, three carabiners, and a faded stain that predates two presidential administrations, were examined after a neighbor raised concerns that the fabric had ‘fused with the porch railing’ during a barbecue. Engineer Priya Anand of Mesa County Structural Assessments confirmed the findings. ‘We initially thought this was a joke referral,’ Anand said. ‘But upon inspection, the tensile strength of the waistband is genuinely holding up a section of Dale’s deck. We’re not saying don’t wash them. We’re saying don’t wash them.’
Trumbull, a self-described ‘shorts guy since ’09,’ says he’s aware of the load-bearing designation but has no plans to alter his wardrobe. ‘These shorts have survived two marriages, one kayaking incident, and a small grease fire,’ he said. ‘You don’t just retire that kind of loyalty. Also my wife hid my other pants.’
The city has since added the shorts to its list of unofficial local landmarks, alongside a lightning-struck oak tree and a gas station with unusually good taquitos. Fashion consultants who visited the site described the garment as ‘less an item of clothing and more a load-bearing ecosystem,’ noting visible moss growth near pocket seven. Trumbull’s homeowners’ insurance has reportedly requested additional documentation before renewing his policy.
