What began as a simple weekend project to build a bookshelf has evolved into what local carpenter Dennis Whitfield now calls ‘basically a support column with delusions of shelving.’ The 6-foot-tall structure, originally intended to house a modest paperback collection, has been reinforced so many times with additional beams, brackets, and what Whitfield describes as ‘a truly heroic amount of wood glue’ that a structural engineer neighbor has informally suggested it may now be holding up part of the ceiling.
The project began three weekends ago after Whitfield watched a 40-minute video titled ‘Bookshelf in an Afternoon.’ By the second weekend, after the first version collapsed under the weight of eleven paperbacks and a candle, Whitfield had purchased $340 worth of additional lumber. By the third weekend, he had incorporated steel L-brackets typically used in commercial construction. ‘I just wanted somewhere to put my book about minimalism,’ Whitfield said, gesturing to the now four-inch-thick shelf boards. ‘It’s ironic, I know.’
Neighbors have reported hearing power tools at unusual hours, including what one described as ‘aggressive sanding’ at 11:47 PM on a Tuesday. Whitfield’s wife, Carla, confirmed the couple’s garage now resembles ‘a lumber yard had a small, sad breakdown,’ and noted that the family car has been parked on the street for over two weeks to accommodate what Dennis refers to as ‘the staging area.’
Structural engineer and neighbor Priya Anand, who was consulted informally over a fence, said she found the situation ‘genuinely impressive from an engineering standpoint, if completely unnecessary from a human one.’ She estimates the bookshelf could now support roughly 4,000 pounds, or approximately ‘a small car, several adult humans, or one extremely ambitious collection of hardcover encyclopedias.’ Whitfield says he plans to add a fourth reinforcement layer this weekend, just ‘to be safe,’ and has begun researching whether the shelf requires a building permit.
