Local Man’s Sourdough Starter Now Has More Life Goals Than He Does

Kevin Bramhall, 34, confirmed Tuesday that his sourdough starter, affectionately named Brad Pittsburgh, has developed a clearer sense of purpose and direction than he has managed to cultivate in the past decade of his own life. The starter, which Bramhall began tending during a bout of restlessness three years ago, reportedly rises consistently, doubles in size on schedule, and has never once considered quitting a job to “find itself.”

“I don’t know what it is,” Bramhall said, staring into the jar of bubbling flour paste with what witnesses described as visible envy. “Brad just knows what he wants. He wants to ferment. He wants to grow. Meanwhile I’ve rewritten my LinkedIn headline four times this year and I still don’t know what a ‘synergy consultant’ does.” Bramhall now feeds Brad twice daily, a level of consistency friends say he has never applied to his own meals, sleep schedule, or gym membership.

Nutritionist and self-described “bread whisperer” Dana Fennimore said Bramhall’s situation is far from unique. “We’re seeing an entire generation project their unmet ambitions onto living cultures that require minimal emotional labor,” Fennimore explained. “A starter doesn’t ghost you, doesn’t need six sessions of therapy to open up, and it never asks if you’re ‘actually happy’ at your job. It just wants flour and water. Frankly, I understand the appeal.”

Bramhall’s roommate, Tyler Osei, confirmed that the starter has essentially become the household’s most reliable member. “We’ve started referring major decisions to Brad,” Osei said. “Like, if Brad’s rising well, it’s a good day. If Brad’s sluggish, we cancel plans. It’s not healthy, but it’s also the only stable relationship any of us has right now.”

As of press time, Bramhall was reportedly considering naming a second starter after himself, explaining that he “wants to see what it feels like to be someone people actually count on.”
