DENNIS FARLAND, a 42-year-old accountant from suburban Ohio, reported feeling ‘lighter than air’ this week after publicly confessing at a dinner party that cilantro tastes like soap and always has. Sources say the admission, which came after fourteen years of quietly picking the herb out of every taco, salsa, and garnish placed in front of him, was met with an audible gasp from three guests and a standing ovation from two others.
Farland says the confession was triggered by a particularly aggressive cilantro-lime dressing at a potluck, which he described as ‘the final straw in a decade-long war of polite lies.’ He had previously told friends and family he ‘just wasn’t that hungry’ on no fewer than 200 separate occasions to avoid eating the herb. ‘I once faked a dentist appointment to skip a Vietnamese food crawl,’ Farland admitted. ‘I’m not proud of it.
