DENVER — Gary Pinsky, 41, an accounts manager and self-described ‘ride-or-die’ fantasy football commissioner, has reportedly hired a licensed family therapist to mediate weekly disputes within his 12-team fantasy league, sources close to the group’s group chat confirmed Tuesday.
The decision came after a trade dispute over a backup tight end escalated into what witnesses described as ‘a full-blown group chat civil war’ involving three separate group chat splinter cells, a 47-page PDF outlining alleged collusion, and one member threatening to move to Idaho. Dr. Melissa Okafor, the therapist hired to facilitate biweekly sessions, said she has never seen anything like it in her 15 years of practice.
‘I usually deal with actual families,’ said Dr. Okafor. ‘But Gary’s league has more unresolved trauma than most divorces I’ve handled. There’s a man named Kevin who hasn’t spoken to his brother-in-law since a Week 6 waiver wire snub in 2019. We’re making progress, but it’s slow. Very slow.’
League members say the sessions have already improved communication, though tensions remain high heading into the fantasy playoffs. ‘We did a trust fall exercise last week,’ said league member Todd Brennan, 38. ‘Then somebody brought up the punter rule again and Dave just left. He didn’t even grab his coat.’
Dr. Okafor has since expanded her practice to include two other fantasy leagues and one recreational bowling team, noting that competitive amateur sports leagues represent ‘an untapped and frankly terrifying market’ for couples and family counseling professionals nationwide.
