Local Squirrel Files Formal Complaint After Third Acorn Theft This Week, Demands Community Meeting

Residents of Maple Hollow Park were startled Tuesday when a visibly agitated gray squirrel identified only as ‘Chester’ by neighborhood regulars staged what witnesses describe as a ‘sit-in protest’ at the base of an oak tree, apparently in response to repeated acorn thefts by a rival squirrel faction from the adjacent birch grove.

Park ranger Denise Fultwater said she has never seen anything quite like it. ‘He was just sitting there, tail twitching, making this really specific chattering sound that our wildlife biologist says translates roughly to “this is unacceptable and someone needs to be held accountable.” We tried to explain that squirrels don’t have a formal grievance process, but he did not seem to accept that answer.’

Local birdwatcher Gerald Nussbaum, who has tracked the squirrel population for eleven years in a spreadsheet he calls ‘The Ledger,’ claims tensions between the oak-side and birch-side squirrel communities have been escalating since early October. ‘It’s not really about the acorns anymore,’ Nussbaum explained while adjusting his binoculars. ‘It’s about respect. It’s about territory. It’s about the fact that Chester buried those acorns in a very specific pattern and someone dug up at least four of them without so much as a courtesy nibble.’

By Wednesday afternoon, the situation had reportedly de-escalated after Chester relocated his remaining acorn stash to a hollow log approximately six feet from the original site, a move park officials are calling ‘a reasonable compromise’ and squirrel behaviorists are calling ‘completely normal squirrel behavior that humans have wildly over-narrated.’ The birch-side squirrels have not issued any statement, though one was seen aggressively flicking its tail near a park bench, which Nussbaum insists ‘says everything.’
