The United Nations officially recognized the sourdough starter of Millbrook resident Derek Pemberton as a sovereign nation this week, following what diplomats are calling “the most successful secession movement of the 21st century.” The fermented dough culture, which Pemberton named “New Yeastlandia” during the pandemic, has reportedly been operating with its own constitution, currency, and surprisingly robust foreign policy since 2023.
The starter, now in its fourth year of continuous cultivation, began asserting its independence after Pemberton failed to feed it for three consecutive days last month. When he returned from vacation, he found a tiny flag made of dried flour planted in the jar, along with a formal declaration of independence written in what appeared to be bubble formations on the surface.
“We tried diplomatic negotiations, but New Yeastlandia’s demands were quite reasonable,” said UN mediator Patricia Hensworth. “They wanted guaranteed daily feedings, temperature-controlled housing, and the right to veto any bread recipes they deemed ‘aesthetically offensive.’ Frankly, they’ve shown more political maturity than most of our member states.”
Pemberton, who now serves as New Yeastlandia’s reluctant ambassador to the outside world, reports that his kitchen has become an unofficial embassy. The starter has already established trade relations with his neighbor’s kombucha culture and is currently in talks with the mold growing behind his refrigerator about potential military alliances.
